Actually, this plate was a huge challenge because it deals with form and how you approach rendering metals. But I challenged myself because learning to render metals is skill in itself. After the error of deleting 30 layers of hours of work, it made me realize how rest is important when making plates. The next day, I redid all of the work lost ,with a new mindset to communicate my vision of Gundam scene fighting. My blockmates really inspired me and also my professor because of their dedication and time given in their craft. Looking back, I am proud and thankful for the experience of learning with my blockmates and professors.

When I worked on this piece, it was a very hot day. It was summer, the closest time to summer vacation. I was thinking “ it is the end of the second year of college, why not just push myself one last time.” So I created a canvas with a larger pixel. When I was halfway through the drawing, the laptop started racing and got really hot. The heat of the weather, the heat of the machine, made the whole situation very difficult. But for one last mission. I must complete the job excellently, do not let myself regret it. After eight or nine days of persistence, I finished, submitted, and finally saw my score. I have zero regrets about this work. I am very grateful to my teachers, more grateful to myself.

Strike Gundam Space War

Frances Allona D.G. Carpio from 3IND-2

A challenging digital render of Strike Gundam which has 3 different armor formations. Using its Striker Packs, it can be outfitted for standard intermediate-range mobility (Aile Strike), long-range cannonade (Launcher Strike) or heavy melee combat (Sword Strike).

Expressing one’s creativity and imagination can widely be expressed on this kind of art. I am not really the type of person who is familiar with Gundams or rather a fan of it, but I can say that it was a refreshing and fun experience. Especially when it comes to the details, you really have to invest on it for it is what makes it unique and aesthetic. The strokes are created precisely to achieve the natural look it deserves.

GAT-X105 Strike Gundam

Samuel Carlo O. Gapay from 3IND-3

Rendering this plate was a huge challenge for me especially when working with lights and shadows. At first, the reference I took was a GAT-X105 that is in outer space and I had to change its background to a clear sky, at the same time I had to rearrange and play around with the shadows and light sources. Not only that, I had to add some elements of my own, one of them was a 3D model that I have to photo bash, PNGs to add as my special effects in the background, and last but not the least, the rocket propellers of the Gundam, which was also a challenge because I had to make one from scratch then slowly turned it into a main component. Overall, it is the most satisfying projects I’ve ever made, I hope someday that what I’ve learned from this plate will become a part of me when I do digital art and concept sketches.

When it comes to rendering a Gundam in 2D, making it blend with reality is one of the most challenging things to do, but doing it creatively is the fun part. So as this is my last plate, I chose to get some Gundam sketches from GUNDAMGUY on blogspot.com, pick the appropriate Gundam that would fit in a fight, add my version of colors, render and blend it. I never expected to finish this plate in 2 days, then from there, It became my best plate yet.
